# England sweating over fitness of Joe Gomez

England are sweating over the fitness of Liverpool central defender Joe Gomez ahead of the upcoming international break.

[According to The Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-star-arsenal-whizkid-ones-13552045), England boss Gareth Southgate will do a late fitness check on Gomez before naming his squad.

Gomez is expected to be named in Southgate’s team if he is fit to play, given his form for Liverpool and England this season.

The young defender has been in sensational form alongside Virgil Van Dijk at the back for Liverpool this season, with his side still unbeaten in the Premier League.

The report also claims that Southgate is pondering whether or not to call Jordan Henderson up, given that he has missed games through injury of late.

Gomez has been struggling with an Achilles problem and there are still doubts over whether or not he will be fit to play for England next week.
