# Ex-Red: Liverpool must persevere with Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge returned to the Liverpool starting line-up for their Capital One Cup quarter-final clash with Southampton and immediately showed his qualities with two excellent goals in four minutes to set the Reds on their way to a convincing 6-1 victory.

The England striker’s injury problems are well publicised, but there is no doubting that when he’s on the field, he’s as good a goalscorer as anybody in Europe.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp [believes](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/623856/Liverpool-Daniel-Sturridge-Premier-League-Jamie-Redknapp-Reds-LFC-News) that Liverpool need to be patient with the 26-year-old and shouldn’t even contemplate letting him leave, despite his less-than-stellar appearance record:

> Now some people have said, “Is he going to become surplus to requirements under Jurgen Klopp? Do you sell him?” I think he’s still the sort of player that you don’t want to sell because you’ve got to enjoy him while he’s here, you’ve got to enjoy him while he’s playing.

Redknapp himself was a player who suffered numerous injuries throughout his playing career, and he said that the last few months would have been tough on the striker and that suggestions that Sturridge’s problems are in his head are likely to be wide of the mark:

> It is interesting because you’re almost questioning his integrity, you’re saying is it injuries or is there something wrong with you? I suffered from a lot of injuries and it’s the worst thing in the world when you’re in the gym and you have to watch the other players go onto the pitch so I can’t imagine that that’s the case.

However, Redknapp did say that Sturridge might be a player who isn’t prepared to play through the odd niggling injury:

> I think he’s the sort of player that unless he’s one hundred per cent fit he won’t play. Make no mistake, he’s an outstanding player, his record is as good as anyone’s when he’s on the pitch.
