# Liverpool end pursuit of Thomas Lemar

Liverpool has cooled their interest in Monaco forward Thomas Lemar and are exploring other options, [according to a Liverpool Echo exclusive](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-withdrawn-interest-thomas-lemar-14265786).

According to the Echo, Lemar is not on Jurgen Klopp’s list of potential targets ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

With Philippe Coutinho leaving for Barcelona in a deal worth around £142million in January, Lemar was seen as the ideal replacement for the Brazilian.

Recent reports in France have suggested that the France international has refused a new contract offered to him by Monaco, which could have bolstered the Reds’ chances of signing him.

However, the club are no longer pursuing a deal for the 22-year old.

Liverpool were believed to be the preferred destination of Lemar when both the Merseyside club and Arsenal came in for him in the summer, but Monaco priced the club out of the move.

Again in January, Monaco’s asking price of around £90million was deemed far too extravagant by Klopp, who opted against signing a Coutinho replacement.

However, it wasn’t purely due to the asking price, as the club’s recruitment team of Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter also questioned whether he would be the correct signing for the club.

Lemar impressed last season by registering 14 goals and 17 assists as Monaco stormed to the title in the French Ligue 1 as well as reaching the Champions League semi-final.

This season though, Lemar has been far less inspiring, scoring and assisting just three and five times respectively.
