# McMahon believes Liverpool are miles ahead of Manchester United

Former Liverpool legend Steve McMahon believes the Reds are miles ahead of rivals Manchester United.

McMahon, 57, was part of Liverpool’s title-winning team in 1990 and admits that he wasn’t expecting such a gulf in class between the two clubs in the lead up to Sunday’s game.

Liverpool are set to host United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, where José Mourinho will be desperately hoping to get one up on the Red Devils bitter rivals.

Liverpool however are genuine title contenders, and Jurgen Klopp will be looking to continue the club’s progression by dispatching the Manchester giants.

McMahon however claims he didn’t expect United to be quite so inconsistent under the former Chelsea boss, with United 16 points behind the Reds.

As quoted by [Mirror Online](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/steve-mcmahon-says-liverpool-head-13730763), McMahon said:

> We are way past United at this stage. United have fallen so below their standards and we have gone above where I think we should be in this short period of time.

> There is miles of difference between Liverpool and Manchester United.

> We’re now head and shoulders above Manchester United and we should take the game to them, while being patient.

> The atmosphere and the game will be different, but we are favourites.
