# Gomez closing in on England call-up

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set for a return to the England senior squad for the upcoming international break.

[According to The Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/gareth-southgate-planning-shake-up-13118445), Gareth Southgate has been impressed with his start to the season and is ready to name him in the squad.

England face Spain and Switzerland at the start of September, with the game against Spain being the first ever Nations League clash in England’s history.

The report claims that Southgate was at Selhurst Park to watch Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 2-0, with Gomez helping his side to a clean sheet.

The central defender has started both of Liverpool’s Premier League matches, with the Reds yet to concede a league goal.

Gomez was set to go to the World Cup earlier this summer with England before missing out via injury – after playing 30 games for Liverpool in all competitions last season.

The squad will be officially named on the 30th August.
