# Gomez features in list of Champions League’s fastest players

Joe Gomez has featured prominently in a list of the fastest players in the Champions League last season.

The 23-year-old has shown signs of returning to top form in the last week or so, performing well against Ajax and Sheffield United.

In the [long-term absence](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/10/18/van-dijk-ruled-out-for-months-with-cruciate-ligament-injury/) of Virgil van Dijk, Gomez is going to be a vital player for Liverpool this season, so Jurgen Klopp needs him at his very best.

On Tuesday, [UEFA’s technical report](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/0262-10b41588faa8-c8625af7d07b-1000--technical-report-key-stats/) from last season showed Gomez among the quickest players in the Champions League, as revealed by journalist Miguel Delaney on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/MiguelDelaney/status/1320787856831500292?s=20):

The Liverpool centre-back was the 11th-fastest player overall, with Kylian Mbappe topping the pile.

Considering the speed of numerous current Reds players, this really highlights how fast Gomez is.

It is easy to assume that [Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/features/347031-video-joe-gomez-liverpool-van-dijk-salah-mane) would be ahead of him, but he is electrifying when he hits top gear.

Pace is a key part of Gomez’s armoury, occasionally getting him out of trouble in a positional sense, and it allows Liverpool to play a more risky high line.
