# Gomez reveals the unique way he celebrated after famous Barcelona win

Joe Gomez has revealed he played Monopoly until 4am the night Liverpool beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield.

The 22-year-old was a late substitute in arguably the [greatest night](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48179167) in Anfield’s history last season, as the Reds overturned a 3-0 deficit in the Champions League semi-final.

In a fascinating interview with the [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1642482/?source=twitteruk&redirected=1), Gomez said Monopoly was his choice of celebration, rather than going out and enjoying the victory.

> We played Monopoly that night! We were up until late. We watched the highlights first on YouTube.

Gomez may not have been a guaranteed starter at the time of the Barcelona game – [injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/verletzungen/spieler/256178) and Joel Matip’s [form](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/how-lionel-messi-barcelona-underlined-16357323) made sure of that – but he finds himself as a vital player now.

The centre-back’s absence was highlighted hugely in Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Watford, with his replacement Dejan Lovren enduring a [dreadful evening](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51708805).

It is easy to forget that Gomez is still only 22, but he is a fantastic defender – giving away [less than one foul per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/136451/Show/Joe-Gomez) in the Premier League – who I think is now Virgil van Dijk’s undisputed first-choice partner. Liverpool need him back as soon as possible, bringing a mix of pace, power, quality on the ball and an expert reading of the game.

His decision to stay in and play Monopoly all night is a testament to the [mature](https://www.rousingthekop.com/2019/12/29/our-view-joe-gomez-could-be-liverpools-final-piece-of-an-almost-uncrackable-puzzle/) and level-headed character that he is growing into, opting against a night out on the town.
