# Grujic eyes Liverpool role next season – is there space for the midfielder?

Marko Grujic could play a key squad role for Liverpool next season, potentially jumping ahead of James Milner in the midfield pecking order.

The Serb is back on loan at Hertha Berlin this season, having shone for the German side in 2018/19.

Speaking to *Bild*, via [https://www.goal.com/en/news/they-wanted-to-pick-me-up-with-a-private-jet-grujic-on-clubs/x9hffafw083w1ig2le5ssf1bp](https://www.goal.com/en/news/they-wanted-to-pick-me-up-with-a-private-jet-grujic-on-clubs/x9hffafw083w1ig2le5ssf1bp)*[Goal](https://www.goal.com/en/news/they-wanted-to-pick-me-up-with-a-private-jet-grujic-on-clubs/x9hffafw083w1ig2le5ssf1bp)*, Grujic stressed his desire to make the grade at Anfield in the near future:

> It’s my goal to play for Liverpool next season, a top European club.

> That’s possible if I play regularly and well here at Hertha. But you never know in life, maybe Liverpool want to sell me next year.

> If that’s the case, then I would love it if Hertha would pay the fee to sign me.

Had Grujic remained at Liverpool this summer, his chances of featuring would have been slim.

That’s nothing against his quality as a young player, but the Reds are littered with strong midfield options.

Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Milner are all effective individuals, meaning Grujic may even have struggled to be included in matchday squads.

There is a fair chance that Milner will be less of a key figure next summer, however, having turned 34 by that point.

He could still remain at Liverpool, but age is now not on his side and an exit cannot be ruled out.

That could open the door for Grujic to come into the squad, assuming he continues to thrive in Germany this season.
