# Gudjohnsen reveals he almost joined Liverpool before Chelsea

Eidur Gudjohnsen was involved in one of the [most heart-stopping moments](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JESksODnF8) Anfield has witnessed this century.

In the Champions League semi-final second leg back in 2005, Liverpool were seconds away from reaching the final at Chelsea’s expense, leading 1-0 on aggregate.

Then the ball fell to Gudjohnsen in front of the Kop in stoppage time, and he looked certain to break Reds’ hearts and send the newly-crowned Premier League champions through.

Instead, the Iceland legend [fired inches wide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JESksODnF8) of Jerzy Dudek’s post and Rafa Benitez’s men sealed a place in Istanbul – the rest, as they say, in [history](https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/4573159.stm).

It turns out that Liverpool fans could have been spared from witnessing that horrific moment completely, had Gudjohnsen joined the Reds.

Speaking to *[Sky Sports News](https://twitter.com/SkySportsNews/status/1226961803416145920?s=20)*, the 41-year-old revealed that he nearly moved to Anfield before Stamford Bridge:

Gudjohnsen was a superb player – one who [tormented](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2001/dec/17/match.sport) Liverpool a few times – so it’s a shame we never got to see him in a Reds shirt.

A subsequent move to Barcelona further shows how good he was, in a [career littered with goals and trophies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ei%C3%B0ur_Gu%C3%B0johnsen#Career_statistics).
