# Henderson does a better job than Fernandinho, claims Allardyce

Jordan Henderson does a better job in midfield than Manchester City’s Fernandinho, according to Sam Allardyce.

Henderson has been in impressive form recently, [winning](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/382718-jordan-henderson-named-england-men-s-player-of-the-year) the England Men’s Player of the Year award on Tuesday.

Having [won the Champions League as Liverpool captain](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/moment-jordan-henderson-lifted-champions-16366282) last season, he is hoping to go one better and seal Premier League glory this time around.

Henderson’s form has not gone unnoticed recently and Allardyce is the latest to laud the 29-year-old.

Speaking on *Sky Sports*‘ [The Debate](https://www.skysports.com/podcasts/the-debate), the former Premier League manager even claimed he was superior to Fernandinho:

> I think it’s a surprising choice that a midfield player \[has won the award\]. I think he is the worthy choice by what he personally has achieved at Liverpool and what he means to the team.

> He links the defending and attacking in the middle of the midfield, as does Fernandinho at Manchester City, so everybody raves about \[Fernandinho\] and Jordan Henderson is equally good if not this season better.

> Mind you, Fernandinho has had to play centre-half most of the time.

> He doesn’t get the same praise as Fernandinho does but he does exactly the same job and sometimes better, in my opinion.

I think it’s great to see endless [praise](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2020/01/jordan-henderson-labelled-best-midfielder-in-the-world-amid-outstanding-liverpool-form/) coming Henderson’s way, after receiving so much stick throughout his career.

He has matured into a formidable footballer, in my opinion, not only in terms of his leadership, but also his all-round ability.

That being said, I believe [Fernandinho](<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernandinho_(footballer,_born_May_1985)>) has been the superior player over the years but is now past his best.

The Brazilian has been hugely influential sitting in front of the back four, snapping into tackles, driving forward and providing leadership for the last [six-and-a-half years](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/22778909).

He has also played centre-back for much of this season, so Allardyce’s comparison is slightly strange.

Henderson has been fantastic, regardless, particularly in the absence of key man Fabinho, who [could return](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11908342/jurgen-klopp-hoping-liverpool-trio-joel-matip-fabinho-dejan-lovren-are-back-for-manchester-united) against Manchester United on Sunday.
