# Klopp gives his verdict on the upcoming Ballon d’Or award

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has weighed in on the upcoming Ballon d’Or awards.

Liverpool duo Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane are both expected to be high in the list, with at least one of them in the top three.

Many pundits believe Van Dijk will receive the prestigious award for his remarkable performances for the Reds and Holland last season.

Klopp also feels that Van Dijk was the best player in world football last season, but he also had something to say about Lionel Messi. As quoted on [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11869654/virgil-van-dijk-jurgen-klopp-says-liverpool-defender-should-win-2019-ballon-dor), he said:

> If you give the Ballon d’Or to the best player of this generation then you should give it always to Lionel Messi. That’s how it is. But if you give it to the best player of last season, then it was Virgil van Dijk.

> I don’t know exactly how it will work but that is how I see it. The best player of all? That’s Lionel. Best player of last season? That’s Virgil. We will see.

Nobody can argue with Klopp’s thoughts here because it is absolutely true.

As a generational talent, Messi is the best from his group and maybe of all time. But if this award is being judged solely on the best player over the past year, then Van Dijk beats him.

Whatever happens, we’re expecting a big Liverpool presence at the award ceremony on 2nd December, especially in the Team of the Season.
