# Klopp provides injury update on Gomez ahead of Chelsea clash

Jurgen Klopp has failed to rule Joe Gomez out of Liverpool’s FA Cup clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night.

The Reds travel to Stamford Bridge for their fifth round meeting, looking to respond after Saturday’s shock 3-0 loss at Watford.

Jurgen Klopp had to make do without the [injured](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/388783-jurgen-klopp-on-joe-gomez-absence-against-watford) Gomez at Vicarage Road, and speaking to the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-prepared-liverpool-response-17842592), the manager provided an update on his potential availability against Chelsea.

> He felt a little bit but nothing major. We just decided no risks.
>
> Will he be okay for the FA Cup? We will get more information afterwards, but I think so although I’m not 100%.

Sometimes, a player’s stock can rise simply by not being on the pitch – exactly that happened with Gomez on Saturday. With Dejan Lovren starting in place of him, Liverpool [were all at sea defensively](https://metro.co.uk/2020/03/01/jamie-carragher-liverpool-watford-strange-dejan-lovren-12328406/), highlighting just how key the 22-year-old has become.

I personally wouldn’t risk Gomez for the Chelsea game, with more pressing matters on the [horizon](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/match/2019-20/first-team/fixtures-and-results). The Premier League clash with Bournemouth on Saturday is arguably more important, as is the Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid on March 11th.

Playing Gomez at Chelsea and him getting injured again could be a major blow, meaning either Lovren or a rusty Joel Matip would have to partner Virgil van Dijk moving forward.

For that reason, he should be wrapped in cotton wool until the weekend, with Lovren and Matip the possible pairing on Tuesday night.
