# Klopp turned down Dortmund return last year – it was never going to happen

Jurgen Klopp had the opportunity to rejoin Borussia Dortmund last year, according to the club’s CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke.

The 52-year-old enjoyed seven memorable years with the German giants between 2008 and 2015, winning two Bundesliga titles and reaching the 2013 Champions League final.

Klopp joined Liverpool in October 2015, however, and is expected to stay until 2022, at the earliest.

In his new book, Real Love – A life with Borussia Dortmund, Watzke has [revealed](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7557829/Jurgen-Klopp-offered-chance-QUIT-Liverpool-return-Borussia-Dortmund-year.html) that he tried to bring his former manager back to the club:

> I knew Jurgen would fulfill his contract until the end. Jurgen has always fulfilled his contracts.

> But I wanted a new path at BVB and I at least had to ask Jurgen to consider.

Klopp produced a brilliant response, however:

> My phone rang while I was on the plane. ‘Jurgen, you have to come back’. I thought he was kidding.

> Are you stupid? Have you been drinking? How did you get the idea? I’ve got a few more years in Liverpool.

You almost have to applaud Watzke’s ambition, considering how happy Klopp appears to be at Liverpool.

It also highlights how adored he still is at Dortmund and how much the club would love him back.

Klopp is one of the most loyal managers you could wish to find in the modern game, however, and he won’t leave Liverpool until his current deal expires.

From a Reds perspective, the hope is that he extends his stay for as long as possible.

He and Liverpool are a match made in heaven and there is still so much more to come from both the German and his team.
