# Lallana reveals the secret behind his improved fitness record

Adam Lallana says being more intense in training has allowed his fitness record to improve.

The 31-year-old turned out in the second half against Tottenham on Saturday, as [the Reds won 1-0 in north London](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50990598).

Having been [injury-plagued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-lallana/verletzungen/spieler/43530) for much of his Liverpool career, he has avoided being sidelined with a serious issue since October.

Speaking to the *[Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool/adam-lallana-liverpool-fitness-training-routine-man-utd-premier-league-a4332716.html)*, Lallana outlined why his fitness has improved, citing training as the key reason behind it:

> It’s just training harder. When you’re not playing, it’s hard to maintain your fitness levels to come back in and be able to perform in this team.

> So you have to train harder, train stronger and make yourself ready, keep on top of everything, so when you are called upon you can deliver performances like last week \[Everton\].

> But that’s not just for me, it’s for all the lads and even the kids too. Credit due to everyone.

> I just want to contribute as much as possible. At times you’ve got to be patient, and that’s it. I just take it; another good training week, train hard and train strong, look to perform there and hopefully start at the weekend.

> But if not, then I’ll look to perform off the bench and help us get the three points, which is the main thing. We want to tick each game off now.

I have been openly critical of Lallana’s Liverpool career, with the midfielder often flattering to deceive with his end product.

Just [one Premier League goal since May 2017](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/1273) suggests that the criticism is fair, but he also deserved great praise for his recent form.

Now one of the senior players in the squad, Lallana, in our view, is cutting a more authoritative figure, playing with a maturity that hasn’t always been on show.

He has been viewed as one of the real [leaders](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/fa-league-cups/liverpool-vs-everton-fa-cup-adam-lallana-curtis-jones-jurgen-klopp-latest-news-a9271501.html) at the club and that is shining through in our eyes, and he has played an important role this season, not least scoring a [late equaliser away to Manchester United](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF8ZSkgtY98) in October.

Lallana should start against them on Sunday, in my opinion, having impressed more than Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain against Spurs, after Jurgen Klopp replaced the latter with the former.
