# Leipzig joke that Werner could join Tottenham this summer

RB Leipzig have jokingly stated that Timo Werner is Tottenham-bound, rather than Liverpool, but there is more to the story than meets the eye.

The Reds have been [tipped](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/01/19/liverpool-forced-into-immediate-interest-in-werner/) to sign the 23-year-old throughout this season, with new claims from *[Sport Bild](https://sportbild.bild.de/)* journalist Christian Falk [confirming](https://twitter.com/cfbayern/status/1227481530190180352?s=20) the club’s interest in him.

Responding to a [tweet](https://twitter.com/indykaila/status/1227497901732945920?s=20) reporting the news on Wednesday, Leipzig’s official account brilliantly replied, saying:

> We heared, he is headed towards [#Tottenham](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Tottenham?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) though …

This is, of course, in response to the fact that Leipzig play Tottenham in the Champions League last 16, where Werner is expected to play a key role in both legs in the coming weeks.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

Werner would be a fantastic signing by Liverpool, in my opinion, bringing him an [endless stream of goals](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/130903/Show/Timo-Werner) – 25 already this season – hard work and versatility.

While it is hard to envisage the striker fitting into a team that already has Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in it, there could be a solution.

Jurgen Klopp could revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation he [used](https://totalfootballanalysis.com/match-analysis/liverpool-arsenal-premier-league-jurgen-klopp-tactical-analysis-statistics) in the first half of last season, playing Firmino in a No.10 role, allowing Werner to lead the line.

The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum have become [hugely important](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2019/11/how-liverpools-midfielders-are-stepping-up-to-share-the-goalscoring-burden/) players, so disrupting the balance in the middle of the park would be a risk.

Acquiring Werner could bring some more quality to the squad, and could be a very good move considering that both Salah and Mane will head to the Africa Cup of Nations next January.
