# Liverpool had bid for Italian international rejected

Liverpool made a bid for Italian international midfielder Claudio Marchisio in the summer, but it was rejected by Juventus.

Juventus’ CEO Giuseppe Marotta [confirmed the news](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-had-a-bid-rejected-for-claudio-marchisioand-they-werent-the-only-ones-juventus-chief-a3093396.html) that the Reds were one of a few teams who tried to sign Marchisio in the summer, but the Turin club wanted him to stay.

He said:

> We always receive a lot of offers for our player, but we are a club that want to buy players rather than selling. Marchisio has just extended his contract and I believe he wants to finish his career with us. By the way, Liverpool were not the only side that made an offer for him.

The 29-year-old midfielder had been with Juventus since the age of seven and made his breakthrough into the first team in 2006 when the club were playing in Serie B due to the Calciopoli scandal, where teams were accused of fixing games by selecting favourable referees.

Marchisio signed a new deal with Juventus in July, one that runs until 2020, but that did not stop clubs, one of which was Liverpool, pursuing a move for him.

Liverpool brought in James Milner to play as a midfielder in the summer, but it appears that former manager Brendan Rodgers also wanted Marchisio.

The failure to capture the Italian may well be the reason why Lucas Leiva didn’t leave the club during the transfer window.
