# Liverpool expect Joel Matip to be out until 2020

Joel Matip has been out with a knee injury since October and whilst Liverpool released a statement earlier this week saying that he’ll be out for at least another fortnight, Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he’s expecting to be without his central defender for a bit longer.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s crunch Champions League clash with RB Salzburg, Klopp said that he expects Matip to be out of action until the New Year, meaning that he’ll have missed at least 11 weeks worth of action.

Matip was in excellent form for the Reds before his injury and had established himself as the club’s first-choice defender alongside Virgil van Dijk.

However, he picked up an injury late in the 1-1 draw away at Manchester United and has been out of action since.

We already knew that Matip would be out for a while when he wasn’t named in the Club World Cup squad but there was some hope that he’d be in contention for the games after the Reds come back from Qatar.

However, that now seems unlikely, meaning Liverpool will have to get by with three senior centre-backs until January at the earliest.
