# Liverpool fans are left shocked by Lovren’s Champions League brilliance

Some Liverpool fans cannot believe the goal Dejan Lovren ‘scored’ in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Croatian [joined](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/28492306) the Reds in 2014, with some seeing him as an [excellent acquisition](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/jamie-carragher-exclusive-dejan-lovren-7552212) from Southampton.

In the six years that followed, however, Lovren became an increasingly divisive figure, with too many [errors thrown in](https://www.90min.com/posts/5971089-liverpool-fan-dedicates-fifty-tweet-thread-to-dejan-lovren-mistakes) at centre-back.

A calamitous performance in a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham in 2017 almost appeared to signal the end of his Liverpool career, but in fairness, he dug deep and played his part in the Reds winning both the Champions League and Premier League.

Lovren will always have that memorable Europa League winner against Borussia Dortmund to treasure, too, in what remains one of the [most dramatic Anfield goals](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJV5xkj_3SA&ab_channel=JackShannon) in history.

On Tuesday, the 31-year-old was in Champions League action for Zenit St Petersburg, in their 2-1 defeat at home to Club Brugge.

Lovren fired a thunderbolt of the strike off the post and into the net via goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in the second half, levelling things up.

Although the goal was credited to Horvath, it was still a stunning hit from the former Liverpool man – certainly a far better effort than his infamous shot against Aston Villa at Wembley in 2015.

These Liverpool have been reacting to Lovren’s strike on Twitter.
