# Liverpool fans hail Fabinho after Man of the Match display against Ajax

Many Liverpool supporters have been lauding the brilliance of Fabinho, following an immaculate performance against Ajax on Wednesday night.

The Reds made the trip to Amsterdam for their Champions League opener, in what looked a tough game on paper.

It was important that Jurgen Klopp’s side hit the ground running in Group D, in order to potentially take the pressure of themselves further down the line.

A lot of the pre-match focus was on Liverpool’s defence – unsurprising, given the gaping void left by the [injured](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/10/18/van-dijk-ruled-out-for-months-with-cruciate-ligament-injury/) Virgil van Dijk.

With Joel Matip also out, it was Fabinho and Joe Gomez who were paired at centre-back and they passed with flying colours.

There was the odd scare from Ajax, but in general, Liverpool’s back-line handled the pressure superbly and their eventual 1-0 was fully deserved.

While Gomez played well at the Johan Cruyff Arena, Fabinho was the [star man](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2020/10/ajax-0-1-liverpool-player-ratings/), looking every bit a centre-back, having dropped back from the midfield role most associate him with.

The Brazilian made an outstanding clearance off the line, but his all-round game was impressive and he held the defence together.

These Liverpool fans, and one very important former player, took to Twitter to heap praise on the 27-year-old – he is going to be an extremely important figure in the coming months.

> Fabinho Man of match. Don't even argue.
