# Liverpool fans react as Gomez is revealed as one of Europe’s fastest players

A number of Liverpool supporters have been lauding Joe Gomez, after it was revealed that he was one of the Champions League’s fastest players last season.

The 23-year-old has found himself in the spotlight in recent months, as he has [struggled to find top form](https://www.rousingthekop.com/2020/10/05/liverpool-might-have-to-worry-about-joe-gomez-after-aston-villa-display/) since lockdown.

There have been times when Gomez has looked susceptible at the back, with opposition teams seemingly targeting the right channel that both he and Trent Alexander-Arnold occupy.

With Virgil van Dijk expected to [miss the rest of the season](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/10/18/van-dijk-ruled-out-for-months-with-cruciate-ligament-injury/) with cruciate ligament damage, the pressure is on Gomez to stand tall without him.

Joel Matip and Fabinho are Jurgen Klopp’s only other established centre-back options currently, showing why the Englishman’s form is so important.

UEFA’s [technical report](https://ucl2020.uefatechnicalreports.com/#page=72) has revealed that Gomez was the 11th-quickest player in last season’s Champions League, judging by the fastest speed of sprint.

The Liverpool man clocked up 32.99 km/h at one point, highlighting the speed that he possesses.

Paris Saint-German superstar Kylian Mbappe was top of the list, perhaps unsurprisingly, while no other Liverpool players were ranked in the top 20.

These Reds supporters have been reacting to the revelation on Twitter, hailing Gomez in the process.

> These types of tables always have defenders quite high up, think it’s because they run into larger areas of space than midfielders/wingers so get to hit their ‘top speed’.
