# Liverpool handed major boost in quest to sign Werner

Liverpool have been handed a huge boost in their quest to sign Timo Werner this summer.

According to [The Athletic](https://theathletic.co.uk/1676386/2020/03/16/chelsea-mailbag-willian-abraham-lampard/), Chelsea’s chances of bringing in the RB Leipzig striker have cooled, due to the Reds’ [interest](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/03/04/werner-really-wants-liverpool-move/) in him.

While the west Londoners are keen to improve their attacking options next season, they reportedly realise that signing Werner is ‘unlikely’, due to Liverpool ‘stepping up their interest’ in him.

Werner has [hinted](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/timo-werner-liverpool-transfer-news-best-in-world-a4366671.html) that he would like to move to Anfield at the end of the season, following four years at Leipzig.

This update can only be seen as a big positive for the Reds, with Chelsea one of those who were viewed as a [direct competitor](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/timo-werner-chelsea-transfer-target-opens-door-premier-league-a4352351.html) in the battle to sign Werner.

I think it says a lot about Liverpool’s current standing that they may simply be too good a proposition in comparison to the Blues.

There was a time when things were very different, certainly during the Jose Mourinho era in the mid 2000s, when Chelsea were a superior team winning more trophies.

Players appear to now be in a position where the thought of linking up with Jurgen Klopp is about as exciting as it gets, with the German not only a world-class man manager, but also someone who has turned the Reds into one of Europe’s most feared sides.
