# Liverpool interested in signing Thomas Meunier

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier this summer, according to a report from French outlet [le10sport](https://le10sport.com/football/mercato/exclu-mercato-psg-liverpool-debarque-pour-thomas-meunier-505004/amp?__twitter_impression=true).

The Belgian international is out of contract with PSG this summer and the Ligue 1 champions have decided not to offer him a new deal. Therefore, he will leave the club on a free transfer at the end of June, unless PSG sign him to a short-term extension to help them compete in the Champions League.

Tottenham are also interested in signing the 28-year-old but le10sport claim that Spurs’ inability to guarantee Champions League football is a potential stumbling block in terms of getting a deal done.

Liverpool already have a fantastic first-choice right-back in Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has emerged as one of the leading full-backs in Europe.

However, with [Nathaniel Clyne set to leave](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/05/20/three-clubs-show-interest-in-nathaniel-clyne/) Liverpool this summer when his contract expires, the Reds don’t have a senior player to back Alexander-Arnold up.

James Milner, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson have all had to play at right-back to cover for the England star at times, which is far from ideal given that none of those three players are natural full-backs.

Neco Williams has also been part of the first-team set up at times, but he’s still a young player and there has been [talk](https://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/liverpool/transfer-talk/news/liverpool-to-loan-out-neco-williams_399037.html) that he could leave on loan.

In what is almost certainly going to be a condensed 2020/2021 season, Alexander-Arnold will need looming after, especially as he’s almost certainly going to be part of England’s squad for the European Championships next summer.

Bringing in an experienced, quality player like Meunier would allow Alexander-Arnold to take more games off, meaning his fitness can be managed better.

If the Reds can agree to a fair contract with Meunier, he could be a very shrewd addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
