# Liverpool linked with move for Garay on free transfer

Liverpool are eyeing up a move for centre-back Ezequiel Garay, according to *[Fichajes](https://www.fichajes.net/noticias/ezequiel-garay-opcion-liverpool-van-dijk-klopp-valencia-20201019.html)*, via *[Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/defender-presented-option-liverpool-became-free-agent-summer/)*.

The Reds have been rocked by an [injury](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/10/18/van-dijk-ruled-out-for-months-with-cruciate-ligament-injury/) to Virgil van Dijk, with the Dutchman suffering a cruciate ligament problem that could rule him out for the rest of the season.

Joel Matip is also an [injury-prone figure](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-matip/verletzungen/spieler/82105), as highlighted by yet another absence in Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Ajax tonight, meaning centre-back options look light at Anfield.

This latest report suggests that Garay is considered an option for the Reds, with the Argentine a free agent after leaving Valencia in the summer.

It is mentioned that he would likely demand high wages on a one-year contract, though.

I think signing Garay would feel like a panic-buy from Liverpool, considering he is now 34 years of age and wasn’t snapped up by anyone else during the summer.

There was a time when Garay’s reputation was far greater, when he [shone for Argentina](https://www.the42.ie/here-are-best-and-worst-xi-world-cup-2014-1570925-Jul2014/) at the 2014 World Cup and reached the final, but his best days are now behind him.

His aforementioned wages could also be an issue, not to mention his own [injury issues](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ezequiel-garay/verletzungen/spieler/35939), of which there have been plenty.

Bringing in an ageing, injury-plagued defender on big wages sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, and not in-keeping with Liverpool’s business under Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards.
