# Liverpool may choose not to sign a new centre-back in January

Liverpool may choose not to sign a new centre-back in January, despite the [injury](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/10/18/van-dijk-ruled-out-for-months-with-cruciate-ligament-injury/) to Virgil van Dijk.

That’s according to the *[Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-defender-january-transfer-news-19162850)*, who claim that Jurgen Klopp could be content with the options at his disposal.

Van Dijk’s long-term absence has left Liverpool with only Joel Matip and Joe Gomez as established available centre-backs, while Fabinho can also fill in capably in that area.

The Reds have been linked with moves for the likes of [Ozan Kazak](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/10/26/liverpool-want-to-complete-kabak-deal-before-january-transfer-window/), [Dayot Upamecano](https://readliverpoolfc.com/?p=106654) and [Kalidou Koulibaly](https://readliverpoolfc.com/?p=106659) in January, but it may be that none come to Anfield.

The *Echo*‘s report simply states that Liverpool ‘may not choose to reassess the centre-back situation as things stand’.

I think there is a definite need for Liverpool to bring in a new central defender, mainly because of Matip’s [injury record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-matip/verletzungen/spieler/82105).

If the Cameroonian was a reliable player in that respect, making do with him, Gomez and Fabinho could arguably work.

He seems incapable of being consistently available, however, highlighting why a new face needs to come in.

Failing to make a January addition, then losing one of Gomez, Matip or Fabinho for a long-term period like Van Dijk, could have a very damaging effect on Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge.

It would feel negligent not to bring in one of the three names mentioned above.
