# Liverpool must sign Werner as they risk losing Salah

With Mohamed Salah’s 2020/21 campaign set to be disrupted, the importance of Liverpool signing Timo Werner is highlighted even further.

According to the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/fears-mohamed-salah-could-now-17990707), Salah could miss around fourth months of next season, due to the Olympics potentially being played in the spring.

The 27-year-old is already set to be on Africa Cup of Nations duty in January and February, and he could now also represent Egypt at the Olympics a few months later.

This would clearly be a major blow for Liverpool, considering Salah’s vast influence since joining from Roma.

The forward has [smashed various records](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/salah-breaks-liverpool-record-a4381131.html) over the last three years, scoring a remarkable [91 goals in 144 appearances](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/1317).

Should Salah be unavailable for the amount of time mooted next season, it only highlights the importance of bringing in Werner.

The RB Leipzig striker has been continually [linked](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/02/19/liverpool-still-favourites-to-sign-werner/) with Liverpool throughout this season, with the 24-year-old viewed as an ideal addition to the Reds’ attack.

While Werner was seemingly seen as someone who could provide competition to Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, this latest update could suggest he may be an even more prominent figure.

To lose someone of Salah’s ability for an extended period, and not have a world-class replacement, could deal a damaging blow to Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes next season.

The chasm in class between the current front-three and the likes of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri is vast – to call upon one sporadically is manageable, but to require them regularly for four months could be problematic.

There is a need to sign a top-quality attacking star even without this news, but this update has only heightened the importance of it.

There is even an argument to say that Liverpool should increase their efforts to sign Jadon Sancho as well as Werner, but that is still fairly unnecessary, considering Salah should still be available for more than half of the campaign.

For now, bringing in Werner has to be the key.
