# Liverpool retain a ‘strong interest’ in signing Werner, claims Pearce

Liverpool still retain a ‘strong interest’ in signing Timo Werner this summer, according to [The Athletic’s](https://theathletic.com/1665996/2020/03/12/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-adrian-origi-minamino-quality/?source=shared-article) James Pearce.

Rumours [linking](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/01/21/reliable-journalist-tips-werner-to-make-liverpool-move/) the RB Leipzig star with a move to Anfield are not going away, following another superb [season](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/130903/Show/Timo-Werner) for the German side.

Werner has [hinted](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/timo-werner-liverpool-transfer-news-best-in-world-a4366671.html) that he would love to play for Liverpool and Pearce’s latest [update](https://theathletic.com/1665996/2020/03/12/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-adrian-origi-minamino-quality/?source=shared-article) suggests a transfer is still on the cards.

He claims that Jurgen Klopp is a ‘big admirer’ of the 24-year-old, who is the [youngest player](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/timo-werner-records-highlights-200-games-with-rb-leipzig-vfb-stuttgart-germany-8181) to make 100, 150 and 200 appearances in the Bundesliga.

I think Werner showed on Tuesday night exactly what a potent weapon he could be for Liverpool, as he caught the eye in Leipzig’s 3-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League.

The striker took up a [left-sided berth](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1435992/Live/Europe-Champions-League-2019-2020-RasenBallsport-Leipzig-Tottenham#heatmaps) for much of the evening, outlining his versatility, with a central role often his position of choice in the past.

On top of that, Werner registered one assist and made three key passes and ball recoveries apiece, according to [FotMob](https://www.fotmob.com/livescores/3236267?date=20200310), highlighting his all-round game.

Of all the deals that Liverpool are being linked with completing this summer, I believe Werner makes the most sense. It could take the pressure off Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino having to both play and star every week, adding competition for places, too.
