# Liverpool set to recall Awoniyi from Mainz

Liverpool look set to end Taiwo Awoniyi’s loan spell at Mainz this month, according to *[Goal](https://www.goal.com/en/news/liverpool-to-recall-awoniyi-from-mainz-amid-loan-interest/f5nsqfs36ava1kctc7ssc4u63)*‘s Neil Jones.

The striker has been the subject of interest from several clubs who want to sign him.

Awoniyi has struggled for playing time at Mainz – he has made just [six Bundesliga appearances](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/281049/Show/Taiwo-Awoniyi) all season – so Liverpool think a move away could be for the best.

Olympiakos, Montpellier, Brest and Nimes are among those believed to be keen on signing the 22-year-old.

Liverpool are going to [meet](https://www.goal.com/en/news/liverpool-to-recall-awoniyi-from-mainz-amid-loan-interest/f5nsqfs36ava1kctc7ssc4u63) with those clubs in the next few days, although it is stressed that Awoniyi would like to stay in Germany.

This comes after Nat Phillips was briefly [recalled](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7830005/Liverpool-recall-youngster-Nat-Phillips-Stuttgart-loan.html) from his temporary spell at Frankfurt, starting in the [1-0 win at home to Everton in the FA Cup](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50976228) before [returning](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2020/01/nat-phillips-rejoins-stuttgart-after-winter-break-back-at-liverpool/) on Monday.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

Awoniyi has no future at Liverpool in my opinion, given the options in front of him in attack.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are the obvious key men, but the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi, Harvey Elliott and Rhian Brewster are also ahead of him in the pecking order.

I think it is fully understandable why the Reds are contemplating ending his loan period at Mainz prematurely, assuming the aim is to sell him permanently.

I believe receiving a fee for the Nigerian would be ideal for the Reds, rather than sending him on another loan move, adding to spells already spent at [Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen and Gent, among others](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwo_Awoniyi).
