# Liverpool trio could be set for new deals – should all three stay on?

Liverpool could offer new deals to Joel Matip, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner, according to [The Athletic](https://theathletic.co.uk/1186911/2019/09/05/live-qa-chat-liverpool-with-james-pearce-thu-5-sep-4pm-bst-11am-et/)‘s James Pearce.

Matip and Milner’s current contracts expire next summer, while Wijnaldum’s runs until 2021.

Speaking in a Q&A on Thursday, Pearce revealed that the Reds are planning on potentially expending their respective stays on Merseyside, although there could be a stumbling block with Matip:

> \[The\] Matip situation is more tricky.

> He’s a high earner having arrived on a free with a hefty signing-on fee, but he’s performing at a level currently where he deserves that status.

Meanwhile, Pearce adds to Milner “made it clear to the club at the back end of last season that he was keen to stay beyond the summer of 2020”, but a pay cut would be needed to keep him on.

On paper, keeping hold of all of Matip, Wijnaldum and Milner can only be a good thing, considering the amount they have contributed in recent years.

All three played big roles in Liverpool winning last season’s Champions League and they are all experienced heads in a relatively young squad.

Matip is in the best form of his Reds career, and at 28, he should be in and around his peak years.

The same applies to Wijnaldum, who is the same age and an integral member of Liverpool’s often underrated midfield.

Milner is the one with the biggest question mark hanging over him, with his 34th birthday fast approaching.

The veteran could be reaching a stage where he becomes a less effective option than someone like Marko Grujic, currently on loan at Hertha Berlin.

He is still as fit as anyone in Liverpool’s squad, however, and if he is willing to reduce his wages, keeping him at the club is a no-brainer, with his off-the-pitch influence huge.
