# Maddison urged to sign for Liverpool instead of Man United

James Maddison should move to Liverpool or Manchester City instead of Manchester United this summer, according to former Reds favourite Steve Nicol.

The Leicester City star has had an impressive season for the Foxes, [scoring six goals and registering three assists](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/137015/Show/James-Maddison) in the Premier League.

Maddison has been linked with a move away from Leicester this summer, with [Liverpool](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpools-philippe-coutinho-replacement-identified-16970413) and [United](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-utd-transfer-news-latest-17560277?_ga=2.159070394.1857701851.1580116201-1940065812.1579512380) two of those rumoured to be interested in signing him.

Speaking to [ESPN FC](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THnu82IQzXU), Nicol said the midfielder should ignore United’s advances and move to Anfield or the Etihad at the end of the season:

> The way Leicester play suits his game and in fact the way they play is a lot closer to what the likes of City and Liverpool do, than what the likes of United do.

> I’d suggest if I’m him, I hang around and wait. Wait for a Liverpool or a Manchester City.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

Although Maddison is a talented player, I don’t feel like he would necessarily be a great addition for Liverpool.

English players tend to be over-hyped and over-priced, in my opinion – [Harry Maguire](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/aug/05/harry-maguire-joins-manchester-united-as-worlds-most-expensive-defender) immediately springs to mind – and the 23-year-old is in that boat.

I don’t see him thriving in the type of hard-working, dynamic midfield that Jurgen Klopp demands, and he doesn’t have the pace or consistent end product to play in the front-three.

While I wouldn’t be unhappy to see Maddison in a Reds shirt, he wouldn’t be a regular starter.

On the flip side, I believe he would join United as a key player, such is the [gulf in class](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/table) between themselves and Liverpool these days.
