# Messi bemoans Mane’s fourth-place Ballon d’Or ranking

Lionel Messi believes Sadio Mane deserved to rank higher than fourth in the Ballon d’Or vote.

The Liverpool superstar just missed out on a place on the podium on Monday night, with Messi winning the award, followed by Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo.

While many were left puzzled that Van Dijk didn’t win the prize, there was possibly more frustration that Ronaldo was deemed to have had a better 2019 than Mane.

Messi seemingly agrees, [telling](https://twitter.com/brfootball/status/1202543395396292608?s=20) *Canal+* that the 27-year-old should have earned a higher ranking:

> “It’s a shame to see Mane finish in fourth place.”

Mane has enjoyed an unbelievable 2019, performing like someone at the peak of their powers.

The Senegalese played a major role in Liverpool’s Champions League win last season and he has been the Reds’ main man in 2019/20 to date, tearing Everton to shreds on Wednesday night.

While Messi and Van Dijk arguably deserved to finish ahead of him, Ronaldo coming third is bordering on ludicrous.

Messi even seems to be having a sly dig at his great rival, correctly suggesting that Mane was a more worthy third-place recipient.
