# Moment in time: Liverpool thrash Barcelona at euphoric Anfield

On the eve of [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/12/on-this-day-striking-duo-earn-comfortable-liverpool-win/) embarking on another attempt to achieve what could be deemed an impossible comeback, what better moment to give hope and relive the night Jurgen Klopp’s side [overcame all odds](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48179167) to eliminate Barcelona.

After heading back from Spain with tails firmly between legs having suffered a [3-0](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48112154) defeat in the Camp Nou, the Reds had it all to do at Anfield in order to qualify for the Champions League final.

Further hampered by injuries to [Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48165344), few gave Klopp’s men hope of conquering the almighty Catalan giants and overcoming the deficit.

Spurred on by [raucous home support](https://www.theguardian.com/football/gallery/2019/may/08/what-a-night-liverpools-stunning-comeback-against-barcelona-in-pictures), Divock Origi got the comeback underway early on before half-time substitute Gini Wijnaldum scored twice in quick succession in front of the Kop to draw Liverpool level.

The unthinkable turnaround was [completed in jaw-dropping fashion](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HldRlTZj_g) as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick-thinking corner caught Barcelona off guard, allowing Origi the freedom of Anfield to fire home his second and make it [4-3](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11713953/liverpool-4-0-barcelona-agg-4-3-liverpool-complete-stunning-comeback-to-reach-champions-league-final) on aggregate.

Unsurprisingly, Klopp and co were sent into raptures at the final whistle as a [shellshocked Lionel Messi](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/anfield-lionel-messi-diego-maradona-19941918), Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho trudged off.

Roared on by an adoring Kop, Liverpool players and staff to a man gathered to celebrate what was a momentous evenings work on the way to [another European title](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/match/2025486--tottenham-vs-liverpool/) in Madrid.

Tomorrow night an empty Anfield will welcome a Real Madrid side equipped with a [3-1](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56641937) victory from the first leg – can history repeat itself?
