# On this day: Famous victory and an infamous celebration

On this day (April 3) 1999,[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/02/jamie-redknapp-insists-gini-wijnaldum-is-not-irreplaceable/) beat Everton [3-2](https://www.lfchistory.net/SeasonArchive/Game/2207)at Anfield with a Robbie Fowler brace and a late strike Patrik Berger.

The Reds, managed by the late, great, Gerard Houllier, had to [come from a goal behind](https://www.11v11.com/matches/liverpool-v-everton-03-april-1999-24008/) after their cross park rivals took the lead in the opening minute through Olivier Dacourt.

Fowler,[who is lauded as a ‘God’](https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/aug/27/robbie-fowler-liverpool-arsenal-premier-league-quickest-hat-trick)by Kopites, drew the hosts level from the penalty spot, sparking a [controversial and iconic celebration](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6839977/20-years-ago-Robbie-Fowler-sniffed-line-shocking-cocaine-snort-gesture.html), before putting Liverpool in front just six minutes later.

Czech Republic international midfielder, Berger, all-but [secured the three points late on](https://www.premierleague.com/match/2828) but there was still time for a nervy finish when Francis Jeffers gave Walter Smith’s visitors a lifeline.

It wasn’t to be however as [Liverpool kept the bragging rights and the points](https://www.premierleague.com/match/2828) on their way to a [lowly seventh-place](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=7&ha=-1) finish, with the blue half of Merseyside floundering in fourteenth.

Some memorable Reds from this fixture include [Vegard Heggem](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/Profile/315), Rigobert Song and a still wet behind the ears [Steven Gerrard](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/02/23/steven-gerrard-told-to-wait-five-years-for-dream-liverpool-job/).

Thankfully for the credentials of football in Liverpool, both sides have improved drastically since this campaign over two decades ago – although currently, it’s[Everton who have the upper hand](https://www.premierleague.com/tables), albeit for the first time in many years.
