# On this day: Liverpool stage dramatic Anfield comeback

On this day (April 14) 2016, [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/13/trent-alexander-arnold-video/) staged a dramatic Anfield comeback on another famous European night to beat Borussia Dortmund [4-3](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36020910) on the night to reach the UEFA Europa League Semi-final 5-4 on aggregate.

After [Divock Origi’s away goal](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35980287) gave the Reds the lead in the first leg at a packed Signal Iduna Park, the Reds were behind the eight-ball from the moment Mats Hummels equalised in Germany.

Two early goals from [Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11959/10243110/liverpool-report) rattled a previously fever pitch Kop crowd – putting Liverpool firmly on the backfoot.

Origi struck back shortly after half time but was almost immediately cancelled out once again when [Marco Reus gave Dortmund their two-goal cushion](https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/025b-0f051d8427fe-b6ccf4aceb27-1000--full-story-liverpool-4-3-dortmund/) once again.

Undeterred, the L4 stadium rallied and [Philippe Coutinho](https://www.squawka.com/en/liverpool-borussia-dortmund-anfield-2016-europa-league/) gave Jurgen Klopp’s side hope against his former club before Mamadou Sakho levelled the score outright.

In the dying embers, [Dejan Lovren rose highest of all](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-4-3-borussia-dortmund-11186966) to fire a header past Roman Weidenfeller to take the metaphorical roof off Anfield.

On this occasion, Liverpool’s European exploits proved fruitless as the Reds [fell short](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36254631) in the final against Sevilla.

However, as Klopp and his side prepare for tonight’s [European showdown with Real Madrid](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/apr/13/we-need-to-be-100-against-real-madrid-jurgen-klopp-tells-liverpool) – with another comeback needed – this anniversary should act as inspiration if nothing else.
