# On this day: Pepe Reina sent off as Liverpool suffer defeat

On this day (April 1) in 2012, Liverpool goalkeeper [Pepe Reina was dismissed](https://www.premierleague.com/match/7773) at St James’ Park as the Reds fell to a[2-0 defeat](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/17503293)at the hands of Newcastle United.

Unfortunately, it was no April Fool’s Day joke for Jose Enrique, as the left-back donned the gloves [against his former club](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jose-enrique/transfers/spieler/35571) after Reina was sent off with 10 minutes remaining for squaring up to James Perch.

Goals either side of half time from [Magpies striker Papiss Cisse](https://www.nufc.co.uk/matches/first-team/2011-12/newcastle-united-v-liverpool/) won the day as the Toon headed into sixth place, whilst the Reds were left floundering in eighth under the stewardship of club legend Kenny Dalglish.

Bizarrely Enrique[kept a clean sheet](https://archive.org/details/NewcastleUnited20LiverpoolMOTDHighlightsSunday1stApril2012)during his time in goal on what was a miserable day all-round for Liverpool, with [Andy Carroll receiving a yellow card](https://www.premierleague.com/match/7773) for diving when through on goal early on.

The Reds [finished the campaign in eighth](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=20&ha=-1)and underwent a change in manager at the end of the season as Dalglish stepped back to [make way for Brendan Rodgers](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/18235961).

These days the fortunes of both clubs have rather gone in alternative directions as Liverpool continue to bask in the glory of recent campaigns whilst Newcastle look to [fend off relegation](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) this term.
