# On this day: Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia give Reds the upperhand

On this day (5 April) 2005, Liverpool earned what proved to be a crucial[2-1 victory](https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/4407891.stm)over Juventus at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Goals from commanding centre-back Sami Hyypia on the 10th minute and a [memorable Luis Garcia volley](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/features/391896-goal-of-the-day-luis-garcia-s-dipping-juve-drive) over legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon put the Reds in control of the contest.

Facing up to a [Juve’ side](https://www.skysports.com/football/liverpool-vs-juventus/teams/59398) managed by Fabio Capello and boasting the likes of Lilian Thuram, Fabio Cannavaro, Pavel Nedved and a young Zlatan Ibrahimovic Rafa Benitez’ men were never likely to run amock on Merseyside.

Shortly after the hour mark, the visitors grabbed what could’ve [proved to be a crucial away goal](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/apr/05/minutebyminute.sport) when Cannavaro [headed home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vItaJtaAgEY) past a 19-year-old Scott Carson.

Part of what is now known as the [‘Road to Istanbul’](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLLtqCGh6PU), the Reds of course sealed their semi-final spot eight days later with a [gutsy goalless draw](https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/4431795.stm) at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Liverpool kickstarts their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals this week with a[trip to Madrid to face Zinedine Zidane’s side](https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2021/apr/03/mohamed-salah-liverpool-real-madrid-champions-league) on Tuesday, with the potential to face Chelsea in the semi-final before a [final in Istanbul](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/fixtures-results/format/) on 29 May.
