# On this day: Steven Gerrard double edges past West Ham

On this day (6 April) 2014, Liverpool edged past West Ham United[2-1](https://www.skysports.com/football/west-ham-united-vs-liverpool/287615) at Upton Park owing to two penalties from Steven Gerrard on what was a landmark day for future captain Jordan Henderson.

Henderson, who has since led the Reds to a Champions League and Premier League success made his [100th appearance](https://www.lfchistory.net/SeasonArchive/Game/5413) for the club as Brendan Rodgers’ side went[back to the top](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/26807039)of the table.

After Gerrard fired his side into the lead, Hammers defender Guy Demel had [levelled the match](https://www.premierleague.com/match/9555)on the stroke of half time.

But, not to be denied Gerrard [clinched all three points](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/apr/06/west-ham-liverpool-live-premier-league-football) from the spot once again as Rodgers’ men continued their pursuit of the title.

The visiting Liverpool side consisted of Jon Flanagan, Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson – along with a now[ashamed trio,](https://www.skysports.com/football/west-ham-united-vs-liverpool/teams/287615)who left the club under varying degrees of clouds.

Ultimately the campaign proved to be in vain as Liverpool fell short on the run after a capitulation at Selhurst Park and an infamous slip at Anfield – leaving the Reds just short in[second place](https://www.premierleague.com/tables?co=1&se=22&ha=-1), two points adrift of eventual winners Manchester City.
