# Pearce pours cold water on Liverpool’s potential Sancho move

James Pearce has his doubts about Liverpool completing a move for Jadon Sancho this summer, particularly if Timo Werner joins the Reds.

Sancho has been [tipped](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2019/12/28/liverpools-interest-in-jadon-sancho-confirmed/) to move to Anfield in recent months, following another eye-catching season for Borussia Dortmund.

There is set to be strong competition for the 19-year-old this season, assuming he moves on.

In a Q&A with [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/1679311/2020/03/17/james-pearce-mailbag-liverpool-klopp-gerrard-werner/?source=shared-article), Pearce has poured cold water on Sancho’s possible move to Liverpool, due to the £120 million required to prise him away.

> I can’t see Liverpool signing them both – maybe if one of the current front three demanded a move, but I don’t expect that to happen.
>
> Jadon Sancho would cost around £120 million and I just don’t think Liverpool would pay that kind of money for someone who wouldn’t walk into their starting line-up. Werner is a cheaper and more likely option.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

I completely agree with Pearce, in terms of not expecting the Reds to sign both Sancho and Werner this summer. The latter represents a much cheaper option, with his £51 million [release clause](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7999367/Liverpool-APRIL-activate-Timo-Werners-51m-release-clause.html) a bargain, considering the RB Leipzig star has scored [88 goals in 150 appearances](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timo_Werner#Career_statistics) for his side.

As Pearce alludes to, spending over £100 million on someone who may not be a regular starter – I don’t believe Sancho would regularly oust Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino – makes little sense, especially if Werner is providing that same added competition.

Picking up [cheaper options](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44818207) like Xherdan Shaqiri in the past has proven that splashing such huge money on a squad player is not Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards’ style, so I believe it feels more likely that Sancho could head elsewhere.
