# Pearce’s update on Keita’s fitness raises cause for concern

James Pearce has revealed that Naby Keita wasn’t ruled out of Liverpool’s clash with Atletico Madrid because of an injury.

The Reds crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, losing 3-2 at Anfield after extra-time, and 4-2 on aggregate.

Keita wasn’t named in Jurgen Klopp’s 18-man squad, with a possible reason being that the Guinean was injured.

However, speaking during a [Q&A for The Athletic](https://theathletic.co.uk/1669390/2020/03/11/liverpool-atletico-madrid-score/?redirected=1) after the game, Pearce responded to rumours surrounding the 25-year-old’s fitness, simply saying:

> Not aware of any injury.

For the first time, I am starting to have doubts about Keita’s long-term future at Liverpool. He arrived to such a [positive reception](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-fans-excited-naby-keita-13265653), but his influence and [injury record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/naby-keita/verletzungen/spieler/302215) have left a lot to be desired recently.

It may be that there is nothing in Klopp’s decision to leave Keita out, but it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Liverpool considered cashing in on him this summer, given his struggles. He has [only started twice](https://www.lfchistory.net/Players/Player/GamesPerSeason/1324-129) this year in all competitions, with his last goal coming back in December, away to Bournemouth.

At 25, the Reds could still earn good money for his signature. He is extremely talented, if he can stay fit, but that money could be used to potentially bring in a midfield alternative this summer.

I hope that won’t be the case, and that Keita will overcome his issues and be a great Liverpool player, but I have my doubts now.
