# Phillips describes Liverpool debut as ‘highlight of my career so far’

Nat Phillips says Liverpool’s victory over Everton last weekend was the highlight of his career to date.

The 22-year-old made his Reds debut in the FA Cup third round clash, helping them to a 1-0 win at Anfield.

Phillips was [recalled](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-bring-nat-phillips-back-21169651) from his loan spell at Stuttgart last month after making [nine 2.Bundesliga appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-phillips/leistungsdaten/spieler/371814), with Jurgen Klopp short on centre-back options in the absence of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.

The youngster grew into the game, and in an interview with [LiverpoolFC.com](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/381571-nat-phillips-reflects-on-competitive-liverpool-debut), he explained why it was so special, praising the team in the process:

> I mean, you can’t really ask for much more from your professional debut for Liverpool. I’ve just got to enjoy it now.

> It’s a great club to be at – at this moment in time as well because they’re doing so well.

> Of course I’m enjoying it, I’m enjoying training at such a high standard, you’ve got to be hitting \[it\] every single day. So you’re improving as a player so much.

> It’s a great group of lads as well, so it’s a nice atmosphere to be working in.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

I believe Phillips was the shakiest of Liverpool’s performers on Sunday, particularly in the opening exchanges.

He looked susceptible in a positional sense, affording Everton several first-half chances, and the pace of the game seemed to catch him by surprise.

That game was his debut, however, on national television against the Blues, so it would be understandable for him to have some nerves.

It would be foolish to judge a player based on how he played on debut and I’d need to see more of him before I could make an informed opinion of the defender.

The issue is that Liverpool already have four senior centre-backs at the club, and Klopp has used Fabinho as a central defender too when needed, so it seems unlikely that Phillips will get any regular game time in the Premier League unless there is an injury-crisis for the Reds.

This just goes to show how difficult it can be for young players to get an extended chance to shine in the first-team of a top side like Liverpool, so the club will need to come up with a plan to allow Phillips to continue his development, with another loan move a potential option for the defender seeming like a logical option to allow him to get regular game time.
