# Players voted for Van Dijk to be Liverpool captain

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that the players voted who would be captain against Red Star Belgrade in midweek.

Jordan Henderson and James Milner – the club’s captain and vice-captain – were both out of the clash, leaving the captain’s armband vacant.

Klopp has revealed that the players voted for Van Dijk to be captain, with Gini Wijnaldum coming second in the voting.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January from Southampton earlier this year for £75m – a world-record fee for a defender – and has been exceptional.

The Dutch international has formed a formidable partnership with Joe Gomez in defence this season and now looks set to wear the armband in the future.
