# A quick start and the sky is the limit for Liverpool this season

Liverpool are making a confident return to the Champions League this season, having claimed fourth place on the final day of the last campaign, as they look to further their improvement under the ‘Normal One’ Jurgen Klopp.

The German’s gung-ho style has captured the imagination across the Premier League since his arrival, let alone Merseyside, and will be looking to take the Reds back to a level befitting their status on the continent.

Despite not having matched all of their title rivals in terms of the eye watering fees spent so far there is still plenty of time for the powers that be at Anfield to add to their three additions so far as they look to bolster for what promises to be one of the most exciting Premier League seasons in recent years.

Former Chelsea men Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke have both signed in the North West, whilst Scottish international Andy Robertson was the latest to walk through the doors at Melwood, joining from relegated Hull City to fill the void at left-back.

The competition for the top four spots this term looks to be more intense than ever with arguably seven sides, including rivals Everton, all in with a shot of taking a place for themselves. While it’s a tough ask Klopp will be determined to improve on their fourth placed finish last term as well as making progress on the continent.

With that in mind, while adding further quality before the close of the window – Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk [remains a target](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2017/07/25/van-dijk-expected-liverpool-player-end-window/) despite the club supposedly withdrawing their interest earlier in the summer – it will take a bit more to ensure Klopp’s side are best placed to continue their growth.

Regardless of how things can fluctuate across the season, with the competition as intense as it is, a quick start in the league is imperative to any side seeking success in the 2017/18 campaign.

The Reds have been handed two lesser sides to open the season in Watford and Crystal Palace meaning that, unlike last season where they managed to topple Arsenal on the opening day before succumbing to Burley the next weekend, six points should be in the bag after two weeks.

As of today (01/08/17), Klopp’s side are [firm 3/5 favourites](https://sports.betway.com/en/sports/cat/soccer/) with Betway Sports to get off to a winning start at Vicarage Road on the opening weekend, and will be hoping to enjoy a similar display to their last visit which saw Emre Can rattle a spectacular overhead kick into the top corner to pick up three points.

Two wins from two would set the squad off on the right footing for a run which sees them take on the Gunners, both Manchester clubs and Tottenham inside their opening ten games.

With two of the promoted sides, Huddersfield and Newcastle, also falling inside those first ten, an early run of form could set the tone for a season of success over the following months to next May.

The Reds got off to a fairly solid start last term, they were third after five, however dropped outside the top four with ten games gone, which will not do this season. As tough as it will be to get past their top four rivals time after time, Liverpool have form. Their record against the top six last term was unrivalled, they [topped the mini league](https://twitter.com/ViktorFagerLFC/status/863811174261018624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theanfieldwrap.com%2F2017%2F05%2Fliverpool-top-six-form-is-a-positive-for-the-reds-chances-of-champions-league-progression%2F) between the big-boys and were undefeated.

With that in mind, perhaps those top sides are not the ones to worry about. Results against the smaller sides early on could well rid the squad of any concerns hanging over them from occasions last season when they failed to take maximum points from the ‘easier’ games.

That said, a quick start would, of course, far from guarantee any success for the Reds in the coming season, however, what better way to get in shape for a potentially triumphant season, get a strong run under their belt after the first ten or fifteen and the sky could well be the limit for Klopp’s side.
