# Reds legend: Liverpool should play two strikers at home

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge thinks that Jurgen Klopp should pair up Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge as a strike duo in home games.

Whilst the decision to deploy Roberto Firmino as a ‘false nine’ has proven to be worthwhile in recent away fixtures, the Reds have still struggled to score goals at Anfield, and Aldridge thinks that playing two strikers is the way to address that issue.

The former Republic of Ireland forward thinks that Liverpool should play the two upfront and deliver more balls into the box and use the aerial ability of Benteke and the finishing prowess of Sturridge on any second balls.

Speaking in his column in the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/john-aldridge-cant-wait-see-10528076), Aldridge said:

> \[Liverpool have\] got to do a lot more at Anfield when teams come and sit in.
>
> Teams will always do the same at Anfield. They sit in, play a narrow 4-5-1 and give Liverpool a little bit of width but nothing in the middle.
>
> When we had \[Luis\] Suarez and \[Steven\] Gerrard, we could find a way through with that little bit of ingenuit.
>
> But at the moment, the players are finding it really difficult to find that bit of magic that can open up teams at home. That’s something that the manager has to work out with them.
>
> For me, I think that will mean Benteke up front with Sturridge, and getting more quality balls into the box from wide positions.
>
> It looks, on paper, a real good partnership in the making.

Aldridge also spoke about Benteke’s form and said that despite the Belgian seemingly struggling in recent fixtures, his hard work coupled with his natural ability will lead to more goals and better performances in the not-too-distant future.

> Benteke is still not firing on all cylinders, if we’re being honest, but the goal against Bordeaux in the week shows you what you get when you pay top dollar for a striker.
>
> He’s 24 (25 this week), so he’s got a lot of years ahead of him at this level, and he’s still scoring at more a less one every two games.
>
> What I will say about the big fella is this; I’ve noticed in the last few games that he is working harder than earlier in the season.
>
> At the beginning, he didn’t work as hard as maybe he should, but under Klopp he knows he has to put a shift in every single game, and he’s doing that. It’s really good to see.
>
> And hey, when you work hard, you get rewards. Hopefully that saying will come true in the coming weeks.
