# Robinson surprised by Lovren being picked ahead of Gomez

Former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson has revealed his surprise at Jurgen Klopp preferring Dejan Lovren to Joe Gomez in recent weeks.

Lovren was handed a start on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League victory over KRC Genk, whilst Gomez played 30 minutes after replacing Andy Robertson in the second half.

Gomez is currently Klopp’s fourth-choice centre-back and as stated on the [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-paul-robinson-astonished-by-klopp-decision-on-liverpool-international/), Robinson is surprised by that. When asked if he’s shocked, he said:

> Yes, very much so. I think Joe Gomez will be disappointed by the amount of game time he’s got this year.

> I think that’s down to the form of Joel Matip, I think he’s been outstanding this year alongside van Dijk so there’s a reason he hasn’t played. Lovren I wouldn’t see as a regular starter for Liverpool, I’d put him as fourth out of the four options they’ve got.

> At the moment you’d play van Dijk and Matip, just because of form. Joe Gomez would be the next one and then Lovren would be the other option.

Is Robinson right to be surprised?

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

It is pretty surprising that Klopp is preferring Lovren over Gomez. When fit, Gomez was Liverpool’s starting centre-back last season and developed a healthy partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

However, after suffering a leg injury against Burnley, Gomez has lost his place in the team and has fallen further down the pecking order.

When he has played, he’s not done anything special and he needs a few big performances to force his way back into the starting XI. At the moment though, because of Matip’s form, that looks highly unlikely.
