# Romeu eyes Saints revenge against LFC – has a fake rivalry been created?

Oriol Romeu is eyeing up revenge over Liverpool this weekend, with his words further highlighting Southampton’s desperation to beat the Reds.

The Spaniard [told](https://www.southamptonfc.com/news/2019-08-11/oriol-romeu-looks-ahead-to-liverpool-post-burnley-southampton-premier-league-1920) Saints’ official website that he believes his side can improve on last season’s result, when they lost 3-1 to Jurgen Klopp’s men at St Mary’s:

> We really want to get a good result. We have a strong team in front of us that we are playing next week. Last season we were very close and I think we competed very well against them.

> This season I think we are going to have our chances against them. They like to play more from the back and take more risks.

> Now we have offensive players who are very good at pressing and they’re going to have their chances. I’m really sure it won’t be an easy game for them and we’ll get our chances.

While Romeu’s comments are perfectly harmless, and exactly what Southampton supporters will want to hear, there does always seem to be extra incentive to beat Liverpool.

A fake rivalry has been created in recent years, simply because the Reds have signed so many of Saints’ best players.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana have made the move from St Mary’s to Anfield, among others, which has clearly irked those at the south coast club.

Their fans seem particularly riled when Liverpool come to town, treating it as some sort of grudge match.

That feeling is only one-way, however, and Reds supporters continue to feel slightly bemused by the situation.

Sure, having your best players nabbed by the same team must be frustrating, but is it really enough to suddenly pretend they’re a true enemy?

A hostile reception no doubt awaits Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, as they look to make it two wins out of two to start their Premier League season.
