# Rumours rife with Liverpool move for Pato

Rumors began to swirl Saturday that Liverpool may have secured a deal in principle with Brazilian club Corinthians for striker Alexandre Pato.

Multiple [outlets seized upon a report](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/alexandre-pato-to-liverpool-agreement-in-principle-for-transfer-of-brazil-striker-in-january-a6726001.html) by Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla for *Tutto Mercato Web* that included comments from Corinthians president Roberto de Andrade.

According to Pedulla, Andrade said: “There is an agreement in principle with Liverpool for the transfer in the coming weeks. There are a few missing details, but Klopp will have a new reinforcement and for Pato the Premier League will be a new springboard.”

The alleged deal would cost Liverpool something near £15m and be Jurgen Klopp’s first signing since taking over at Anfield.

The former AC Milan teen sensation has been rebuilding his career in his homeland with the hopes of returning to Europe. Injuries took a heavy toll on the attacker, now 26 years-old.

However, there is plenty of suggestion that his rapid decline was at least in part due to being overplayed early in his career.

It is important to highlight Melissa Reddy [is reporting for Goal.com](https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/69/transfer-zone/2015/11/07/17088882/liverpool-denies-deal-for-pato) that the Merseyside club has already distanced themselves from the rumours.

Given the original source of the rumors and Reddy’s exclusive report, the veracity of such a deal is completely unclear. Plus, Pato is currently on loan and playing for Sao Paulo.

Still, the thought of Pato joining the Reds as reinforcement for their strike force is a fascinating one. The prospects of another skillful Brazilian attacking player to join Phillipe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino certainly has allure.

Since leaving Europe, the striker has seen success in efforts to resurrect his career. He scored 17 times for Corinthians. Since joining Sao Paulo in February of 2014, he has scored 37 times.

While the price might add risk, it is no surprise that Liverpool would be looking to add depth to their striker pool, given the season-ending injury to Danny Ings, fitness struggles of Daniel Sturridge, and difficulties of Divock Origi. Managed well, Pato could possibly be a steal of a squad player.
