# The three ways Curtis Jones’ Liverpool career could pan out

Curtis Jones is still in the infancy of his blossoming career, but how will things pan out for the teenager?

This season has been a breakthrough campaign for Jones, who has made a noticeable leap forward. He has continued to shine in the academy, captaining the U23s superbly and often looking [on another level](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2020/02/curtis-jones-nets-8-minute-hat-trick-as-liverpool-u23s-reach-last-16/) to anyone else on the pitch.

More importantly, though, the 19-year-old has seized his opportunity in Liverpool’s first team, having been a promising youngster for a number of years.

Jones memorably scored the only goal in the FA Cup clash with Everton, curling home brilliantly to fulfil a childhood dream as a boyhood Red. He also found the net in the fourth round draw away to Shrewsbury Town, going on to shine in the replay victory at Anfield.

Add to that two Premier League appearances, and 2019/20 has been one that Jones will cherish forever.

It remains to be seen how Jones will progress from this point, but we think there could be three ways his Liverpool career may play out from here…

### Future Liverpool superstar

The most pleasing scenario is one that sees Jones go on to become a genuine star at Liverpool, much in the way Trent Alexander-Arnold has.

There is no denying the teenager’s outrageous natural talent, and in many ways, he has everything in his locker to make the grade and be a legend.

Tall, physical, skilful and with an eye for goal, Jones could add guile to Liverpool’s midfield, becoming increasingly influential as he matures as a player.

Let’s not forget that Steven Gerrard didn’t truly come into his own until his very early 20s, so Jones has a few years to really hit his strides.

It will be difficult, considering the standard of player Jurgen Klopp now expects in his squad, but along with Alexander-Arnold, he is the most exciting player to emerge from Liverpool’s academy in the last decade.

Should Jones continue this rapid rise, future greatness for club and country cannot be ruled out.

### Fringe player at best

There is huge competition for places at Anfield now, so it would be wrong to simply expect Jones to have a big future at the club, however.

He will have to produce on a regular basis to prove his worth, or Klopp will have no issue in disposing of him.

As Liverpool look to push on and become an even bigger force, it may be that Jones isn’t good enough to be a fixture in this side.

When someone like Kai Havertz is being [linked](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2020/02/19/liverpool-claimed-to-have-made-e125m-bid-for-havertz/) with the Reds – he is only a year older than Jones – it speaks volumes about the calibre of footballer Liverpool are trying to attract.

As much as many supporters would love nothing more than to see a homegrown star mirror Gerrard and be the star man, that may be unrealistic.

There is a fair chance that Jones has to accept being a fringe player moving forward, much in the way Adam Lallana currently is, albeit at a very different stage in his career.

### Moved on swiftly

The worst cast scenario, of course, is that Jones ends up having no Liverpool future, as is the case with the vast majority of young players.

Alexander-Arnold is essentially the only British star since Gerrard to leap from academy prospect to key man, outlining how tough it is going to be.

Put simply, Jones is entering a crunch period in his Liverpool career – one where he has to keep impressing Klopp and show that he can be an important part of the dynasty he is building.

With Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all ahead of him in the midfield pecking order, and new signings potentially coming in, that is going to be an enormous challenge.

If he doesn’t cut it regularly, finding himself out of the matchday squad and possibly even back in the U23s, the writing could quickly be on the wall.

As it stands, everything is up in the air, and it will be intriguing to see how Jones fares.
