# These Liverpool fans react to rumour that Mourinho turned down van Dijk move

Jose Mourinho reportedly turned down the opportunity to take Virgil van Dijk to Manchester United.

That’s according to [https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/manchester-united-how-to-fix-blueprint-solskjaer-ed-woodward-epl-transfer-man-city-a9091531.html](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/manchester-united-how-to-fix-blueprint-solskjaer-ed-woodward-epl-transfer-man-city-a9091531.html)*[The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/manchester-united-how-to-fix-blueprint-solskjaer-ed-woodward-epl-transfer-man-city-a9091531.html)*, who claim the Portuguese “didn’t want a centre-half” during the transfer window back in January 2018.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool for £75 million in the same month, for a then record fee for a centre-back, swiftly becoming the world’s best centre-back in the eyes of many.

Needless to say, Reds supporters have taken plenty of glee in United’s failure to sign the Dutchman, taking to Twitter to air their views.

### Read Liverpool Verdict

Should this story be true, Van Dijk would likely have turned down United’s advances anyway.

Both Liverpool and Manchester City wanted him at the same time, and currently, moving to one of those two makes far more sense for any player.

Van Dijk opted for the Reds, in a decision that has proved hugely beneficial to both the player and the club.

In the 20 months since he arrived on Merseyside, his influence has been nothing short of astonishing.

It just shows how things have changed between Liverpool and United in the post-Alex Ferguson era, with the Reds’ rivals surely favourites to have signed Van Dijk had he been around 10 years ago instead.
