# Reina and Mignolet: A Comparison

If the rumours are to be believed, and it looks like they should given how many reputable sources are reporting it, Liverpool will soon be signing the Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, from Sunderland.

Although it looks like Mignolet is about to sign for the Reds, many are unsure if he is coming in as aback up keeper or as a replacement for Pepe Reina, who is still being linked with a move to Barcelona, despite their first choice ‘keeper Victor Valdes committing to another season with the Catalan giants.

One question on the minds of most Liverpool fans is; if Reina does leave, is Mignolet a good enough replacement? To help people make up their own minds, I’ve complied a short comparison between the two ‘keepers based upon their 2012/13 Premier League Season performances:

[![ReinaCompare copy](https://readeverything.co/readliverpool/readliverpoolfc/2013/06/ReinaCompare-copy-300x180.png)](https://cdn.readeverything.co/readliverpoolfc/2013/06/ReinaCompare-copy.png)[![MignoletCompare copy](https://readeverything.co/readliverpool/readliverpoolfc/2013/06/MignoletCompare-copy-300x180.png)](https://cdn.readeverything.co/readliverpoolfc/2013/06/MignoletCompare-copy.png)

Obviously, there are a whole bunch of circumstances to consider when comparing these basic stats; mainly that Mignolet was playing for a poor Sunderland side last season, and also that Reina missed a few games through injury and probably wasn’t 100% fit during some of his 31 games.

I’m also aware that there’s plenty more to being a top class goalkeeper than the categories identified above, but this short comparison is to help fans make a quick comparison between the two players.

For what it’s worth, I believe Reina is the better ‘keeper of the two and if both are at the club next season I’d like it to be the Spaniard who is our first choice, with Mignolet being a more than capable back up. However if Reina does leave for pastures new, I believe that Simon Mignolet would be a perfectly good replacement and I applaud Rodgers and the club for being so proactive in getting cover, or in the worst case scenario, a new goalkeeper.
