# Gallery: Old Trafford memories

Liverpool travel to Manchester United on Saturday evening, in a fixture that has brought the Reds such joy and agony over the years. The latter was certainly the feeling last term when David de Gea’s heroics combined with poor Liverpool finishing contributed to a devastating 3-0 scoreline in favour of the hosts.

The season before last brings happier memories for Brendan Rodgers, as it was Liverpool who were the victors by three goals to nil.

Here’s some classic pictures of some of the Reds’ Premier League trips to Old Trafford down the years.

**1997-98** – Phil Babb looking to keep possession from Paul Scholes, in a game in which Michael Owen scored and was sent off for Liverpool. It finished 1-1.

**1999-00** – Patrick Berger hits a thunderous 30-yard free-kick past Raimond van der Gouw to give the Reds the lead.

Berger is congratulated by his team mates, but unfortunately for Gerard Houllier’s men, United salvaged a point late in the first half.

**2000-01** – A season later, and another first half free-kick gives the visitors the lead. Danny Murphy would make quite a habit of this!

Luke Chadwick saw red for hauling down Vladimir Smicer in the second half, and Liverpool held on for their first ever Premiership (as it was then called) win at Old Trafford.

**2001-02** – He’s done it again! Murphy latched onto a delicious Steven Gerrard through ball with five minutes to go, and looped it delicately over Fabien Barthez to claim his second winner in as many seasons at United.

**2002-03** – Suppose we’d better be balanced. United thrashed 10-man Liverpool 4-0 in April 2003 on their way to reclaiming the title from Arsenal.

**2003-04** – But the Gunners had Murphy to thank for their third title in seven seasons, as he converted from the spot to end United’s hopes and give the Reds a 1-0 victory. (Perhaps going the season unbeaten also helped Arsene Wenger’s men, but still).

Murphy’s Liverpool career will largely be remembered for his three Old Trafford winners in four seasons. Some feat.

**2006-07** – The Reds’ good form at Old Trafford deserted them for the next four years. Rafael Benitez was on the losing side in each of his first four visits to M16.

**2008-09** – The Spaniard solved the conundrum at the fifth time of asking, though. An in-form Liverpool came from behind to thrash Manchester United 4-1 in their own backyard, and keep their hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy alive.

Fab Aurelio with the pick of the bunch, perhaps. Pure wizardry.

**2011-12** – The Reds then went another four years without a league win at the home of their arch-rivals, and the rivalry intensified even further with the Luis Suarez/Patrice Evra debacle.

**2013-14** – Liverpool’s 3-0 win away at United in March 2014 was just one episode in possibly their most irresistible run of form in Premier League history.

It truly was some afternoon at Old Trafford, and some season.

**2014-15** – It wasn’t so fun on the last visit, though, as the hosts brushed the Reds aside despite an encouraging display from Rodgers’ men. Liverpool will be out for revenge come Saturday, that’s for sure.
