# Gerrard Identifies Harsh Reality Facing Liverpool After 1-0 Arsenal Defeat

There is rarely a tough pill to swallow for Kopites than watching an opposition side march out of L4 with three points after a grinding, defensive masterclass. But when an iconic former captain steps back to deliver an unvarnished assessment of the title race, it is always worth listening.

Arsenal claimed a 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon to move three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta’s side will host Hull City at the weekend in their final match before the November international break, where they could extend their lead at the top of the league standings even further.

The Gunners were beaten by Brighton before the last international break in September, but have since responded with four consecutive wins in the Premier League.

Speaking on Monday’s episode of *[The Overlap](https://share.google/WtjfgKpITdiJQovmL)*, Steven Gerrard was impressed with what he saw from Arsenal in the win over his former club, with the Liverpool legend explaining why the Gunners have shown they are capable of winning the title once again.

### “They Will Look Back at That More Than Your Four or Five-Nils”

Reflecting on the decisive moments at L4 including early errors, missed opportunities, and controversial penalty calls Gerrard broke down where the match was won and lost:

> **“They \[Liverpool\] shot themselves in the foot, because there was no need to concede that early goal.”**

> **“But they had the \[Alexis\] Mac Allister chance to get level, and obviously the penalty incident is big. Alisson makes a save.”**

> **“I thought, on the balance of the whole game, 1-0 would have been a fair result, but credit to Arsenal.”**
>
> For Gerrard, Arsenal’s ability to weather the Anfield storm and emerge with maximum points represents the hallmark of true champions:
>
> > **“That’s how you win leagues, going to places like Liverpool, being strong, sticking together, and putting in a different type of performance, which was full of grit and fight and togetherness, and they got over the line.”**
>
> > **“And they will know that come the end of the season, if they win the league, which I think they will, I haven’t changed my mind from the beginning of the season, they will look back at that more than your four or five-nils where they look fantastic, because I’m sure they will at times.”**
>
> > **“They’ll look at that and think, we went to Anfield, tough crowd to play against, tough Liverpool performance, Andoni Iraola’s got this Liverpool team playing an awful lot better, Liverpool played well and we managed to get out of there with three points.”**
>
> > **“Could be huge for Arsenal. At this moment in time, nine points behind for Liverpool. So, Liverpool have got work to do if they want to challenge. But this Arsenal team just look as if they can beat teams in different ways. I think that could be the difference.”**
> >
> > Gerrard’s comments hits on a painful truth that every Reds supporter felt leaving Anfield on Sunday: **nine points is a steep mountain to climb in November.**
> >
> > Under Andoni Iraola, Liverpool have undoubtedly progressed. The pressing is sharper, the tactical identity is clearer, and performance levels against top-tier opposition have frequently been high. Yet, as Gerrard rightly pointed out, title races are rarely decided by aesthetics; they are decided by efficiency in both boxes.
> >
> > Arsenal showed the Kop what title-winning resilience looks like. For Liverpool to close that gap, Iraola’s men must match that ruthless edge and find ways to turn promising performances into relentless results.
